Maxine Rubin

About Maxine

Maxine Rubin completed her PhD in Political Studies at the University of Cape Town in South Africa in 2022. Her dissertation was a comparative study of 34 African states’ behaviour in relation to the International Criminal Court and proposed an adaptation of Albert Hirschman’s Exit, Voice, and Loyalty model. She was awarded several grants for her doctoral degree, including the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Merit Scholarship and Vice Chancellor’s Research Scholarship.
 
She was awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship for her MA in Post-War Recovery Studies at the University of York in the United Kingdom. Maxine specialises in Africa’s international relations, transitional justice, and gender rights within post-conflict development and she has experience in lecturing, peer review, and policy advocacy.
 
She has extensive experience as a researcher, editor, lecturer and consultant. She has worked previously at the Legal Resources Centre, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation, and the South African Journal of International Affairs. Maxine is currently a  Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the German Institute of Global and Area Studies, in Hamburg, Germany. She is also the co-Editor-in-Chief of the academic journal, Africa Spectrum.
